50 Shades ... E-book to Sensation

I love to read stories of successful authors. So when I read a piece about the author of 50 Shades of Grey, I had to delve deeper. This book has become a best-selling phenomenon, and the buzz is appearing in uncommon places. Have you read this book? If so, what about this book hooked your interest?

  1. I both cheer and jeer this. It's great that an author can bypass the traditional publishing model and get her book out to a wide audience mostly by word of mouth. But this is also a prime example of how bypassing editors and the traditional back-office machinery of publishers can create what is essentially a very low-quality product that could have been so much more with guidance. I'm embarrassed to admit I read this series, but curiosity got the better of me. The repetitive dialogue, predictable storyline and cardboard characters just about drove me nuts. I have waved friends away from purchasing any of the books and offered my Kindle if they must read them. This series is the first I've ever read that really made me fear for the future of both books and readers.

    1. I totally agree with you, Let, I'd be very nervous letting a book go without the benefit of a hard review by my editor (See The Pirate's Bastard, for an example ... when the second edition comes out next month, it will be so much stronger thanks to a tough edit and more attractive from a professional cover designer. It had the benefit of neither with the "real" publisher the first time out.)
